Short answer: Choose an AI mentor who works with you live and 1:1 on your own goals, publishes clear prices and refund terms, shows real learner outcomes, and teaches the tools you will actually use. If you only need the material, a free self-paced course may be enough. If you need a plan, structure and someone holding you accountable, mentorship is worth the higher cost.
I am Arthi Rajendran from The Arthi AI Collective. I run 1:1 AI mentorship, so I have an obvious interest here. That is exactly why this guide tries to be fair. Not everyone needs a mentor, and not every mentor is right for every person. Below is the checklist I would use if I were choosing one myself.
Step 1: Decide if you need a mentor at all
Start with an honest question: do you finish things on your own?
If yes, and you already know what you want to build, a free course can take you a long way. NPTEL, SWAYAM, Microsoft Learn, Elements of AI and Google AI Essentials are all good places to start. I compare them in the best AI courses in India.
If you have started courses and stalled, or you need AI applied to your specific job, degree or business, a mentor makes more sense. I go deeper into this choice in 1:1 AI mentorship vs online courses.
Step 2: The six criteria that matter
1. 1:1 or cohort?
In a cohort, the batch sets the pace and one instructor teaches many learners. In 1:1 mentorship, the whole session is about your problem. Cohorts give you a peer group and often a credential. 1:1 gives you a plan built around you. Neither is better for everyone, so pick based on what you are missing: peers, or personal attention.
2. Live or recorded?
Ask directly: "Are sessions live, and are they with you, or with an assistant?" Recorded videos are fine for theory. They cannot answer the question you are stuck on at 11pm about your own spreadsheet. In my programs, every session is a live 1:1 video call, nothing is pre-recorded, and no session is delegated to a teaching assistant.
3. Is it friendly to non-IT learners?
Many people who want AI skills are managers, founders, teachers, designers and HR or finance professionals. Look for a mentor who explains things in plain language and does not assume coding. Ask: "What does a first session look like for someone who has never used a terminal?" A good answer involves a real first win in session one, not a week of setup.
4. Proof: can you read real learner stories?
Testimonials that say "great teacher" are nice. Stories that say what someone actually built are better. Look for specific outcomes, the learner's role, and quotes in their own words. On my site, Learner Stories are shared with written consent, shown by role only, with quotes word for word. For example, a product manager on AI Career Switch built and hosted a live app within five days of her first session, and a logistics business owner on AI From Zero connected Codex to his CRM and automated social media publishing in four sessions.
5. Is the price transparent?
You should be able to see the price, the number of sessions, the session length and the refund policy before you get on a sales call. If the price only appears after a long pitch, be careful. My programs page lists every track, timeline and price in rupees. Each week includes one live 60-minute 1:1 session. Cancel before your first session for a full refund, and unused weeks are refunded pro-rata if you stop partway.
6. Which tools will you actually use?
AI tools change fast. Ask which tools the mentor teaches and whether the list is fixed or customised to you. A good mentor teaches tools you will keep using after the program ends. My baseline toolkit includes Claude Code, Claude Cowork, Claude Design, Codex, Ollama and other open-source tools, customised around what you want to learn, build or improve. Business tracks add tools like n8n, CRMs, Google Workspace and WhatsApp automation.
Step 3: Compare the real options fairly
Here is how the main types of AI learning options in India compare, using only what each provider publishes. Check the live page before you pay, because prices and offers change.
| Option type | Example | Format | What the provider states | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marketplace mentors | Topmate | Book individual experts for paid calls | Creators sell video calls from 5 minutes to 8 hours at times they choose, plus webinars and courses. Topmate states 4.8 million+ bookings and ₹100+ crore paid to creators. | topmate.io |
| Marketplace mentors | MentorKhoj | Book 1-on-1 mentors across exams and careers | States 1000+ verified mentors across India, categories including AI, Tech, NEET, IIT-JEE, UPSC, CA and Law, and booking in 60 seconds. | mentorkhoj.com |
| Free self-paced courses | NPTEL, SWAYAM, Microsoft Learn, Elements of AI | Self-paced, recorded | Free modules and courses; NPTEL offers an Indian certificate exam option. | Best AI courses in India |
| Paid platforms | Coursera, DeepLearning.AI | Self-paced with certificates | Structured courses and certificates; prices vary, check the live course page. | Best AI courses in India |
| University and cohort programs | Programs run by IITs, IIMs and other universities, often with edtech partners | Live classes, a batch and a fixed schedule | Fees and time commitment vary by institution; ask for the syllabus and speak to past learners. | Best AI courses in India |
| 1:1 mentorship | The Arthi AI Collective | Live weekly 60-minute 1:1 sessions with Arthi, WhatsApp support between sessions | Five tracks, from ₹8,999 for 4 weeks; most run 4, 8 or 12 weeks; full refund before the first session, pro-rata after. | Programs |
How to read this table: marketplaces are great when you want one focused conversation with a specific expert. Free courses are best for testing whether AI is for you. Cohort and university programs win if you need a recognised credential and a peer group. 1:1 mentorship fits people who want a plan built around their own work and weekly accountability. It costs more per hour than a recorded course, so try free options first if budget is tight.
Step 4: Red flags to watch for
- Job guarantees. Nobody can honestly guarantee you a job. Proof of skill helps; promises do not.
- No visible price. If you cannot find the price, session count and refund terms in writing, ask before you pay.
- "1:1" that is really a recorded course. Ask whether sessions are live and who runs them.
- Vague outcomes. "Learn AI" is not an outcome. "Build two portfolio projects for your target role" is.
- No real learner proof. Look for specific stories with roles and outcomes, not only star ratings.
- A fixed tool list that ignores your work. The tools should fit your goals, device and budget.
- Pressure to decide on the first call. A good mentor will tell you if mentorship is not the right move.

Frequently asked questions
What does an AI mentor do that a course does not?
A mentor builds the plan around your goals and works on your real tasks with you, live. A course gives everyone the same syllabus. The main difference is a plan made for you and someone who notices if you stop.
Do I need a technical background to work with an AI mentor?
No. A good mentor for beginners starts in plain language. At The Arthi AI Collective, AI From Zero has zero prerequisites, and AI Edge for Working Professionals is for IT and non-IT professionals.
How much does 1:1 AI mentorship cost in India?
It varies by mentor, so always ask for a written price. At The Arthi AI Collective, tracks start at ₹8,999 for four weeks of live 60-minute 1:1 sessions, and every price is listed on the programs page.
Is a marketplace mentor on Topmate or MentorKhoj a good option?
It can be, especially for a single focused question. Marketplaces let you book individual experts quickly. Check each mentor's own reviews, what a session includes and whether there is any follow-up plan.
Can an AI mentor guarantee me a job?
No. Nobody can honestly guarantee a job. A good mentor helps you build real projects and proof of skill. Treat any job guarantee as a red flag.
