Do You Still Need to Code?

Arthi's Take · By Arthi Rajendran · Published · Updated

Why this question is hot right now

At Rails World 2026, David Heinemeier Hansson said his company, 37signals (the makers of Basecamp), has stopped hand-writing code as its normal way of working. McKinsey's State of AI 2026 survey found that 32% of organisations had skipped buying some software because they could build it themselves with agentic coding tools.

And I see the same thing in my own sessions. A product manager with no coding background built and deployed a real app within about five days of starting with me. A founder I work with built and shipped his own apps through GitHub and Vercel, then set up automations across sales, customer success, finance and marketing. Neither of them "learned to code" first.

What a coding agent is

A coding agent reads your files, writes code, runs it, sees errors and fixes them, with your approval. The main ones:

  • Claude Code (Anthropic): included in paid Claude plans. Also available in the Claude desktop app if you prefer no terminal.
  • Codex (OpenAI): included with ChatGPT plans.
  • GitHub Copilot: inside code editors, with a free tier.

Which one to pay for? See which AI tool to pay for.

What you still need to learn

  1. How to write a clear brief. The problem, the users, what done looks like.
  2. How to test. Click every button. Try wrong inputs.
  3. The basics of how apps fit together: frontend, backend, database, API.
  4. GitHub and hosting. Saving versions and putting an app online (Netlify, Vercel). "How do I deploy this?" came up in about eight of my recent client calls.
  5. Security basics. Keep API keys out of your code. Read is it safe to let an AI agent use your computer.
  6. Small edits. A common question: "How do I change one sentence on my Claude-built site?" Ask the agent for exactly that change, check it in a preview, then publish.

Install Claude Code in 5 minutes (checked October 2026)

  1. You need a paid Claude plan (Pro or higher). The free plan does not include Claude Code.
  2. Open a terminal.
  • Mac, Linux or WSL: curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
  • Windows PowerShell: irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex
  • On Windows, Git for Windows is recommended.
  1. Open a new terminal and type claude --version. A version number means it worked. If it says "not recognized", see the setup and troubleshooting pages at code.claude.com.
  2. Go to a project folder and type claude. Sign in with your Claude account.
  3. Prefer no terminal? Download the Claude desktop app and use Claude Code there.

Tip: if a variable called ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set on your machine and you approve it, Claude Code bills that API key instead of using your subscription.

The terminal is the scariest part for most beginners, and it lasts about five minutes. Once you see the agent answer you in that black window, the fear goes.

Your first build: 5 steps

  1. Pick a small real problem (a timetable, a tracker, a simple form).
  2. Describe it in one paragraph. Sketching it on paper first helps.
  3. Ask the agent to build version one. Approve each step.
  4. Test, then ask for one fix at a time.
  5. Save to GitHub and host it.

Should you still learn to code properly?

If you want to be a software engineer: yes, the fundamentals still matter, because you will review and own the agent's code. If you want to solve problems in your own field: learn enough to brief, test and stay safe. That is the line I draw for every learner who asks me this.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build an app without coding?

Yes, with a coding agent, if you can explain the problem clearly and test patiently.

Claude Code or Codex?

Both are strong. Pick the one that comes with the plan you already pay for.

Is vibe coding good enough for real business tools?

For internal tools and prototypes, often yes. For anything handling money or personal data, get a developer to review it.

Do coding agents cost extra?

Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan (Pro or higher). Codex comes with ChatGPT plans, with light use on Free and Go and much more on Plus and above. All plans have usage limits, so heavy users may need a higher plan.
