Your Free ChatGPT Go Year Is Ending. Should You Renew or Cancel?

Arthi's Take · By Arthi Rajendran, The Arthi AI Collective · Published · Updated

Do not renew ChatGPT Go on autopilot. Find your renewal date, then spend five minutes checking whether you actually hit the free plan's limits. If you use ChatGPT every day for uploads, images, voice or long documents, Go can be worth it. If not, free ChatGPT, or Google's free AI Plus year if you are a university student, may be enough.

Why this is coming up now

A year ago, OpenAI made ChatGPT Go free for 12 months for users in India who signed up from 4 November 2025. The Indian Express reported it at the time, noting that India is ChatGPT's second-largest market.

According to Digital Tatva's renewal explainer, new claims stopped around January 2026, and each free year ends 12 months after you redeemed it. That means the earliest users hit renewal in early November 2026. Unless you cancel, Go renews on your saved card or UPI mandate at the normal price, reported at Rs 399 a month.

People are already asking each other on X whether to cancel or renew. My answer: neither by default. Decide with evidence.

What Go gives you over free ChatGPT

Here is what OpenAI's pricing page lists today, in plain terms:

  • Free: unlimited everyday text chats (within usage policies), but limited uploads, image creation, voice chats, memory and deep research.
  • Go: more messages with tools, more uploads, more image creation, more voice chats and longer memory. It also lists scheduled tasks and a larger chat context window than Free. OpenAI notes the plan may include ads.
  • What Go does not include: the advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research and other features reserved for Plus and Pro.

So Go is a "more of the everyday stuff" plan. That is useful for some people and invisible for others.

The 5-minute test

Grab your phone and answer honestly.

1. How often did I open ChatGPT in the last two weeks? If it was a few times, the free plan almost certainly covers you.

2. Did I use the things that are limited on Free? Think about file and PDF uploads, image creation, voice chats, and long documents. If you mostly type questions and get text back, Free gives you unlimited everyday chats.

3. Did I ever rely on memory or scheduled tasks? If ChatGPT remembering your context saves you real time at work, that counts for Go.

4. Do I already have another AI tool for free? Many people now have a free or bundled Gemini, Copilot or Claude plan. Paying twice for overlapping tools is the most common waste I see.

5. Would Rs 399 a month change anything for me? For a working professional who uses it daily, Rs 399 can pay for itself quickly. For a student watching every rupee, it is real money.

Score it simply. Three or more "yes, I use that heavily" answers to questions 1 to 3: renew, and review again in three months. Mostly "no": cancel and use Free. Unsure: cancel, use Free for two weeks, and resubscribe if you genuinely miss something. Your chat history stays with your account.

Students: check Google's offer first

If you are a university student in India aged 18 or over, Google is offering one year of Google AI Plus free of charge if you redeem by 31 December 2026, according to Google's India student page. It includes higher Gemini usage limits and 400 GB of storage. A valid payment method is required, and it renews at Rs 399 a month unless you cancel. So the same advice applies: write down the end date.

How to avoid a surprise charge

  1. Find your date. In ChatGPT, open Settings and check your account or subscription page.
  2. Set a reminder a few days before it.
  3. Cancel in the right place. If you subscribed through Google Play or the App Store, cancel there, not only in ChatGPT.
  4. Check UPI autopay. Open your UPI app and look for any mandate linked to ChatGPT or OpenAI.
  5. Keep a screenshot of the cancellation confirmation.

My take

Free offers are a great way to learn what you actually need. The mistake is letting a free trial quietly turn into a permanent expense without asking whether it earned its place. Run the test, keep what you use, and spend the money you save on learning to use one tool really well.

Frequently asked questions

When does the free ChatGPT Go year end in India?

The free year runs 12 months from the day you redeemed it. The offer opened on 4 November 2025, so the earliest users reach the end in early November 2026. Check your own date in ChatGPT under Settings, in your account or subscription section.

How much does ChatGPT Go cost in India after the free year?

Go has been reported at Rs 399 a month in India. Confirm the price shown in your own ChatGPT account before your renewal date, since prices can change.

What do I lose if I cancel ChatGPT Go?

You move to the free plan, which still offers unlimited everyday text chats (subject to OpenAI's usage policies) but with limited uploads, image creation, voice, memory and deep research. Go offers more of each, plus a larger context window and scheduled tasks, according to OpenAI's pricing page.

Can students in India get a free alternative?

Yes. Google is offering eligible university students in India aged 18 and over one year of Google AI Plus free, if redeemed by 31 December 2026. A payment method is required and it renews at Rs 399 a month unless cancelled.

How do I avoid being charged if I decide to cancel?

Cancel before your renewal date in ChatGPT settings. If you paid through Google Play or the App Store, cancel there. Also check your UPI app for any autopay mandate linked to ChatGPT.
