UK House of Lords pushes for AI "kill switch" powers
Peers in the UK House of Lords have formally called for the government to have powers to shut down AI systems in emergencies. Separately, the UK government opened a consultation on regulating how employers use AI to monitor and make decisions about workers, covering tracking, performance scoring, and automated HR decisions.
Why it matters: Governments are moving from AI advisory frameworks to proposals for hard shutdown powers. India prepares to let AI agents handle UPI payments automatically
India is finalising a framework (the Unified Agent Protocol), that will allow AI agents to make small digital payments through UPI without user approval for each transaction. Users would set rules in advance (budget caps, approved categories, recurring purchases), and the AI handles execution within those limits. The protocol is expected to launch at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, September 9–11, 2026.
Why it matters: India would become one of the first countries in the world with a national infrastructure for agentic AI payments. Fintech companies, ecommerce platforms, and every business that sells recurring services in India should pay close attention.
680,000 students in Utah get free access to Google Gemini for school
The Utah State Board of Education announced a statewide partnership with Google to deploy Gemini for Education across all public schools for the 2026–27 school year, covering 680,000 students and 28,000 teachers at no cost to families. North Carolina is simultaneously defending a $10 million state budget earmark to fund Khan Academy's Khanmigo AI tutoring tool for school districts across the state.
Why it matters: AI tutoring is moving from pilot programme to standard state-level provision. Nvidia's full-stack AI control play

No other company holds that complete chain.
